This bronze sculpture on a granite base is of an Australian soldier in World War I throwing a Mills bomb. It was created by Charles Webb Gilbert of Melbourne and unveiled by Lt. General Sir John Monash on 11 October 1925.
A bronze tablet on each face of the base is inscribed with the names of those from the Broken Hill district who died in World War I.
It is the largest free-standing war memorial action sculpture in Australia.
